Cars speed by on a busy street

Drivers, passengers see her

feel horror

sorrow

a hint of guilt

they look away quickly

and try to forget her

She had a family once

a daughter and son in law

but they grew too busy

didn't care enough

when she started to have problems

they were too far away

she lost her house

then even her car

now all she has is a shopping cart

she has family, somewhere

but no one who really cares

  1. I saw her, too, just the other night,
not that far away, as I went speeding by.
