morning rain in New York City
just a mist, but makes one wet
people hustle down the sidewalk
water won’t hurt you, but still they fret
woman, high heels, designer dress
drags along poodle in designer coat
strolls down avenue with bright blue umbrella
looking elegant and remote
homeless man without an umbrella
lays in alley in a box
sees them, shivers
pulls his coat tighter
thinks about her as he coughs
taxis pass in black and yellow
honking, starting, stopping, going
traffic like a moving carpet
always moving, always rolling
a million souls moving, churning
like a child’s container of ants
all with dreams, goals and ambitions
all partners in life’s short dance
